Tangkap nyamuk....

What is tangkap nyamuk all about...

Huhuhu sume pun tergelak aku cakap 'malam ni nak g tangkap nyamuk'....Ayat paling sadis dari family members ku 'ish anta belajar tinggi-tinggi, tapi keje tangkap nyamuk jer'.... Huhuhu sedih gile...aku punya la berhempas pulas tangkap nyamuk 7pm to 7 am but sume tolong gelak jer...

Meh aku cita sikit apa sebenarnya keje tangkap nyamuk ni...Actually now I’m doing my master degree in field medical entomology…Entomology stands for insects. Insect that I’m dealing with is the insect those have a medical important to human such as mosquito which can cause filariasis diseases (untut or kaki gajah), dengue, malaria, chikangunya and many more… But now I’m doing most on Culex quinquefasciatus which are the most dominant mosquito species in urban area making it among the most important species here in Malaysia. This species has now achieved medical importance for it has been identified as potential vector for the disease ‘Urban filariasis’ or ‘Lymphatic filariasis’. Cx. quinquefasciatus is responsible for transmitting Wuchereria bancrofti (filariasis parasite) through its bite from one victim to another.

1st time berjaya tangkap gambar nyamukku
yang di culture sendiri di lab mating..left is male, right is female

Before, the urban Lymphatic filariasis caused by Wuchereria bancrofti and transmitted by Cx. quinquefasciatus which breeds in polluted water is thought to be rare and not a public health problems in Malaysia. But in year 2007 in Penang it self, we found 32 cases of filariasis involving Wuchereria bancrofti infection and all patients were recent immigrant from Myanmar, Nepal, India and Indonesia (illegal migrated worker). Until now, there are no filariasis (Wuchereria bancrofti) cases involving our local people. But now in Malaysia, we have both the vector and parasite. So we have the potential to spread the diseases.
bare leg catch technique

So what I’m doing now is to studies the bionomic of Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes and its potential as a vector of Wuchereria bancrofti transmission. I need to collect the field mosquito and culture in laboratory to observe the live-span period, fecundity (each female can produce how many egg). What is ‘tangkap nyamuk’ is, I’m doing the bare leg catch technique on adult mosquito to examine the biting cycle and seasonal abundance of this mosquito species. In this technique adult female Cx. quinquefasciatus mosquito were collected from lower parts of the body of the trained volunteer. The mosquito landing collections on human bait were made from 7pm to 7am.

Then in lab I need to infect the mosquito with the infected blood that I got form patient (illegal migrated worker in kem tahanan).Wait until 14 day and dissect the mosquito. Then observe under microscope either the parasite can survive and develop inside the mosquito body. Then I need to do the PCR technique (Polymerase Chain Reaction) to determine the mosquito with the filariasis gene. filariasis diesease or untut or kaki gajah
Huhu macam buat proposel pulak…but when I said ‘pg tangkap nyamuk’ its really look stupid to other. Actually it’s not that stupid. By doing this work, I can find out either our mosquito here in Malaysia, can spared this diseases. And these studies can help people out there from suffer in this diseases… So please dont judge a book by its cover…
